How the Lovely Have Fallen

Fallen Princesses  is a photo essay by Dina Goldstein that captured my attention today.

Put simply, I adore it.

These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The '...happily ever after' is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.

The project was inspired by my observation of three-year-old girls, who were developing an interest in Disney's Fairy tales. As a new mother I have been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girls fascinated with Princesses and their desire to dress up like them.

American photographer Thomas Allen constructs witty and clever dioramas using figures cut from the covers of old pulp paperbacks. Using salacious pulp art drawing’s of the ’40s and ’50s that covered books such as ” I Married a Dead Man” and ” Marihuana Girl’, Allen constructs one set of pictures up close while obscuring another, and in the process creates a different context. Each piece is given a brand new storyline, though never quite strays from their cheeky origins.

Wired.com's new "Secret Lives" series looks at individuals you encounter every day and reveals a side of them you normally wouldn't see.

What better profession to begin with than the comic store employee? And what better time to start than now, as the WonderCon comic convention invades San Francisco this weekend?

From the sassy princess of underground comics to the pajama-wearing ex-convict, your local pulp-pushers are anything but ordinary. We've profiled nine comic crusaders, five from New York and four from the San Francisco Bay Area, photographing them in their shops and at home. We asked each employee roughly the same questions, and their responses are published alongside their photos.

The pictures almost make me want to work in a comic book store.

Almost.

It's just that they make it look like the new Empire Records.

"Exactitudes kicked off 14 years ago when Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek noticed that their city’s youth were expressing their mass nonconformity by wearing nearly identical outfits.

(The name is a mash-up of exact and attitude.) 

The project grew exponentially from there — you’ll meet tattoo babes, grannies, punks, and preppies — and its excellent website now includes subjects from London and Paris. 

(They, too, look eerily alike.) 

The overall effect is cool but disconcerting."
